Tips for Managing Heat Stress in Poultry

Heat stress is a major challenge in Poultry and dairy production, especially during the hot summer months. It occurs when birds/animals face difficulty in achieving a balance between body heat production and heat loss. This imbalance can lead to several health issues and production losses such as

  Mortality                    Feed intake

  Gut health                  CFCR

  Body weight             Meat quality

  Immunity                  Egg production.

  Egg weight                Egg shell quality

  Albumin height       Hatchability

How to mitigate heat stress for poultry birds?

There are some prevention strategies which could make the poultry birds escape from the hot summer stress. Let’s see about that.

1.      Drinking water management:

Focus on the availability of drinking water with sufficient water flow (> 70 ml/minute/nipple drinker). Keep the water temperature below 25°C by doing Pandhal and whitewash for water tank which is outside. Add Vitamin and electrolyte supplements in the drinking water.

 Ventilation and Farm management

Do not disturb the birds during the hottest time of the day and all the management practices should be done in the early morning hours (beak trimming, transfer and vaccinations). Increase the movement of air in open houses with stir fans - minimum velocity of 1.8–2.0 meters/ second and do not overstock cages. Use foggers and misters – Adjust time on the basis of temperature and humidity.

Lighting Program

ü  Adjust the lighting program to provide more morning light hours - to encourage feed consumption. Use a midnight feeding of 1–2 hours to provide an additional feeding. Lower the intensity of light during the hottest time - to reduce bird activity.

      Nutritional Management

ü  Avoid feeding times during hot periods of the day and try to distribute feed at early morning (1/3) & evening time (2/3). Prefer mash /crumble feed type with presence of large particle limestone.

ü  Feed should be made denser with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals and use vegetable or highly       digestible protein sources  Maduramycin can be used as an anticoccidials.

       Intellibond ZMC:

Selko®  IntelliBond® is the first line of hydroxy trace minerals for use in animal feeds acts as an effective source of copper, zinc, and manganese for animals. During hot summer, try to supplement animal feed with trace minerals, which helps to maintain the health and performance of animals. Intellibond from Trouw Nutrition optimizes trace minerals from the feed and safeguards the immune function of animals.
